Lady Mustangs fall to Piggott

The Hoxie volleyball teams were in action twice last week, facing Piggott in a 3A-Northeast Conference match and stepping out of conference to face Trumann.


Piggott's Lady Mohawks defeated Hoxie in a senior high match on Thursday at Piggott. Piggott swept the three games by the scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-19.

For Hoxie, Sarah Manis had six assists, two digs and a kill. Courtney Sears had two digs and four kills. Krista Coffell had a dig and two kills. Maddison Woodard had six kills, and Maria Fry had seven digs. Grace Hall had a dig and seven kills. Emily Hatfield had eight digs, and Zoe Willfond had five assists.

Hoxie's junior Lady Mustangs pushed Piggott to three games before falling to the Lady Mohawks 17-25, 25-17, 16-25.

Krista VanKirk was 15-of-16 serving, with seven aces and had 10 assists, two digs and two kills. Sequoia Irvin served one ace and had three digs and eight kills. Katelyn Jamison contributed four digs, while Danielle Maronde had two digs. Kelsey Moody served two aces and had an assist and two kills. Brooke Willfond had an assist, seven digs and two kills.


The Trumann Lady Wildcats edged Hoxie in high school volleyball action on Sept. 10 at Trumann.

With Hoxie leading the match two sets to one, Trumann edged the Lady Mustangs 25-23 in the fourth game to square the contest at two sets apiece. Trumann then won the fifth game 15-7 to take the match.

For Hoxie, Hall had 16 kills. Manis had 17 assists, a dig and a kill, and Zoe Willfond added 15 assists. Sears finished with 12 kills and seven digs. Coffell had a dig and five kills. Woodard had four assists and five kills. Maria Fry had a block and three kills. Emily Hatfield had two digs, and Chasity Kingsland had five digs.

In junior high action, Hoxie earned a three-set victory over the Lady Wildcats.

Hoxie took the first game 25-13, before Trumann came back for a 26-24 win in game two. Hoxie won the third game 25-19 to take the match.

VanKirk was 18-of-19 serving, with six aces and had seven assists, a dig and two kills. Irvin was 7-of-8 from the service line and had three digs and three kills. Maronde was 10-of-11 serving, with two aces and had two digs and three kills. Jamison had three digs and four kills. Moody had four assists and a kill, and Brooke Willfond had seven digs and a kill.
