Strong third quarter lifts
Hoxie over Cavemen
The Hoxie Mustangs scored 22 unanswered points in the third quarter to break open a close game and went on to defeat the Cave City Cavemen 42-28 in senior high football action Friday at Cave City.
Hoxie got on the scoreboard first on Gunner Cook's eight-yard scoring run in the first quarter. The PAT failed and the Mustangs led 6-0 after one period.
Hoxie extended its lead when quarterback Cole Sears passed 15 yards to Slade Sullens for the Mustangs' second touchdown. Sears then passed to Hunter Wilson for the two-point conversion and a 14-0 Mustang lead.
Daron Stigger scored on a one-yard run later in the quarter to bring the Cavemen to within 14-6.
Hoxie responded shortly before halftime on Colton Brown's one-yard run to give the Mustangs a 20-6 lead at halftime.
Cave City scored the first points of the second half when Stigger broke free for a 65-yard touchdown scamper. The two-point conversion brought the Cavemen to within 20-14 early in the third quarter.
Cook scored on a 14-yard run, then ran in the conversion to give the Mustangs a 28-14 advantage.
Later in the quarter, Cook scored on a two-yard run for his third touchdown of the game. Sears kicked the extra point for a 35-14 Hoxie lead.
Late in the period, Sears scored on a quarterback keeper from a yard out to give Hoxie a 41-14 lead. Sears' PAT provided the Mustangs' final point.
Cave City scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to set the final score.
Sears completed seven-of-nine passes, for 124 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 88 yards on 11 carries.
Cook led Hoxie in rushing with 97 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. He had two receptions for 84 yards.
Brown led the Mustangs' defensive effort with 11 tackles and an interception. Sullens had seven tackles, and Austin Williams recorded six stops. Kyle Wilson and Colton Johnson each had an interception.
Hoxie improved to 2-0 on the season and will open 3A-3 Conference play on Friday when they host Osceola at Crider Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
