Isaac brings rain to county
Lawrence County felt the effects of Hurricane Isaac, but came away in much better shape than many others in the state.
Tractors were busy in this rice field on Greg Gill's farm on Thursday. Farmers throughout the county and surrounding area worked frantically to put up as much grain as possible before rains from Hurricane Isaac hit the area.
No structural damage was reported in Lawrence County, unlike nearby Clay County, where the airport was heavily damaged in Corning.
The more than two inches of rain that fell was welcome after a summer of drought, but the timing was off for farmers who are a few weeks into the harvest season.
WR Council deals with dwindling
Walnut Ridge City Council members have been concerned about the city's dwindling bank account for many months and have not seen marked improvement in city funds despite recent efforts to cut back on spending. A special meeting was called on Aug. 28 to discuss reasons for the decrease in the city's bank balance and to make plans to get the city's finances back on track.

WR budget woes
A special meeting was set by the city council for last night to meet with the mayor and city department heads to discuss possible layoffs or cut backs in personnel, but some of these decisions have already been made. On Friday, six city employees were laid off due to budget problems. Mayor House said three street department workers, a full-time police officer and two part-time officers were told last Friday was their last day. One full-time mosquito control employee and three part-timers will be laid off in the middle of this month and the code enforcement and building inspector jobs have been consolidated into one 30-hour-a-week job.
