Brooklynn Nicole Smith

Anthony and Jennifer Smith of Walnut Ridge have announced the birth of a daughter, born on July 23, 2012, at St. Bernard's Birthcare Center in Jonebsoro.

The baby weighed nine pounds, seven ounces, and has been named Brooklynn Nicole Smith. She has one brother, Drake, three.

Grandparents are Gary Smith and Linda Smith, both of Walnut Ridge, and Tammy Nicholas of Black Rock.

Weddings / Engagements

Gill ~ Geier

Paul and Jo Ann Gill of Walnut Ridge have announced the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Elizabeth Ashley Gill, to Marc Anthony Geier, son of Cyndy Geier of Indianapolis and the late Mark Geier.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Jake and Jean Justice of Beaumont, Texas.

She is a graduate of Eastside Baptist Academy in Jonesboro and Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Fla. She is employed at Episcopal Children's Services in Jacksonville, Fla.

The prospective groom is the grandson of Helen Theising of Schnellville, Ind., and the late Hilbert Theising.

He is a graduate of Warren Central High School in Indianapolis and is active in the United States Army.

The couple will exchange vows on Aug. 25, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Parker Homestead in Harrisburg. All family and friends are invited to attend.

Jenice Beardsley

Jenice Beardsley, 68, of Hoxie, died July 28, 2012.

Born Oct. 26, 1943, in Walnut Ridge, she was the daughter of Charles and Betty Lou Chassiter McEntire. She was a factory employee and was of the Baptist belief.

Survivors include her husband, Danny Ray Beardsley, whom she married Nov. 17, 1962; a son, David Beardsley and wife Sharon, Jonesboro; a daughter, Christina Hodge, Blytheville; her mother, Betty Sharp, Walnut Ridge; a brother, Danny Charles McEntire and wife Teresa, Alicia; five grandchildren, Amanda Murry, Desiree Beardsley, Mica McComb, Brandon Richards and Joshua Beardsley; and a great-grandson.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bryan Funeral Home with Bro. John Bailey officiating.

Nina H. Cate

Nina H. Cate, 89, of Nashville, Ark., formerly of Walnut Ridge, died July 30, 2012, in Nashville.

Born Jan. 30, 1923, in Minturn, she was the daughter of Lee and Alta Ann Aaron Hutton. She attended Arkansas State College and was a retired social worker for the State of Arkansas Department of Human Services. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Walnut Ridge. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Garden Club and served as a state officer of the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was an avid golfer and was a former club champion at the Walnut Ridge Country Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Cate, in 1992; and five siblings.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Hood and husband Jim, Nashville; three grandchildren, Jeff Hood, Marti Steel and Jimmy Hood; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be in Walnut Ridge at a later date.

Randall Dale Gaines

Randall Dale Gaines, 57, of Walnut Ridge, passed away July 26, 2012, at his residence.

Born Oct. 31, 1954, in Walnut Ridge, he was the son of Cecil and Melva Woodson Gaines. He was a welder and metal fabricator. He was a longtime deacon of the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Walnut Ridge. He was a musician all his life, loved his church and God and loved children. He was a family man and loved them all.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert "Bob", Lloyd, and his twin Rodney Gaines; and two sisters, Vicki Gaines and Sharon Schmidt.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Middlecoff Gaines, whom he married Feb. 22, 1974; a son, Michael and Tonya Gaines of Jonesboro; three grandchildren, Gage, Sabrina and Nathaneal Gaines; two brothers, Jerry and JoAnn Gaines of Winnebago, Ill.; and David and Trudi Gaines of Hot Springs; two sisters, Linda and Mike Porter of Roanoke, Va.; Diana Neldon of Jonesboro; a sister-in-law, Vivian Gaines of Rockford, Ill.; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral was Sunday at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Joel McMasters and John Holsapple officiating. Burial was in Oak Forest Cemetery at Black Rock under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Wayman Hutton, T. Wayne McQuaid, Rodney Worsham, Coy Yasler, Jeff Downum and Tommy Gray. Honorary pallbearers were Perry Simpson and Randy Looney.

Matthew James Gorecki

Matthew James Gorecki, 45, of Hoxie, died June 28, 2012, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born Dec. 7, 1966, in Saginaw, Mich., he was a longtime area resident. He was a cabinet maker for 23 years and also worked on vehicles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Helen Reed Brandon; and two brothers, Monty Brandon and Ronnie Brandon.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Peggy Gorecki; a son, Stephen Gorecki, Michigan; a stepson, Joshua Gray, Walnut Ridge; a stepdaughter, Monica Long, Walnut Ridge; and four grandchildren.

Private services were under the direction of Faith Funeral Service of Manila.

Erma Lee Hall

Erma Lee Hall, 77, of Jonesboro, died July 24, 2012, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born April 10, 1935, she graduated from Walnut Ridge High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church and was active with the women's group and the Red Cross blood drive for several years at the church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dave Allison; and her mother, Mary Louise Hufstedler Binkley.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, James "Jim" Hall; a daughter, Deborah Miller and husband Glin, Jonesboro; a son, Jim Hall Jr. and wife Mary Margaret, Rogers; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Estrada and husband Phil, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and four grandsons, John Miller, Lee Hall, Jared Hall and Clay Hall.

A celebration of her life was held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Cornerstone United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Hemund officiating. Private burial was in Veteran's Cemetery at Birdeye under the direction of Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Cornerstone United Methodist Church.

Bonnie King

Bonnie Mae Dement King, 83, of Egypt, died July 25, 2012, at her home.

Born Jan. 1, 1929, at Macey, she was the daughter of James Thomas and Lillie Mae Catlett Dement. She was a homemaker and a member of the Egypt Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Larry Eugene King; five brothers, Donald Dement, Desmond Dement, Ray Dement, Bobby Dement and Charlie Dement; a half-brother, Alvie Dement; and a half-sister, Laverne Hollis.

Survivors include her husband, Floyd King; a stepson, Floyd Leon King; eight grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life was held Friday at 10 a.m. at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Burial was in Philadelphia Cemetery.
