Rezoning project continues

Mayor Lanny Tinker told the Hoxie City Council that he and the Planning and Zoning Commission will meet with Urban Planning Associates, Inc. of Little Rock on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at city hall for their second session. The public is welcome to attend.

The mayor said the rezoning project should be finished in approximately nine months.

Mayor Tinker reported he has recommended Water/Wastewater Superintendent James Houston to be appointed to the Northeast Arkansas Public Water Authority board.

"John Allen has done a good job on the board but most of the cities have their superintendents on the board," Tinker said. "Due to the fact that they are discussing rate hikes, I think the city needs to be represented appropriately for control."

The council approved Houston to represent Hoxie on the board.

Fire Marshal Will Tate announced that the fire department will begin business inspections soon. Tate said the fire department has an open door policy and that he encourages the public to ask questions about the department's code enforcement or fire protection policies.

Mayor Tinker said the city has been working on cleaning alleyways, ditches and unsightly areas in Hoxie and reminding residents that everyone needs to comply with the cleanup ordinances. Tinker said he has instructed the code enforcement officer to address unsightly areas that are not complying with Ordinance #2007-11 and follow up with corrective action if necessary.

Tate shared "Project Retake Hoxie," a book containing before and after photos of the cleanup efforts. Tate said he thinks the city is on the right path to clean up the community.

Tinker also reported that code enforcement has found seven out-of-compliance swimming pools and has given the owners 10 days to become compliant or remove the pools.

In other business:

  • the city will be accepting bids in the near future on replacing sewer pumps on Liscomb Street. The cost of replacement is approximately $45,000.

  • the patching of Midway Road was completed by Asphalt Producers, LLC.

  • Alderman Tim Taylor will attend the Arkansas Municipal League convention in Hot Springs.

  • Tinker expressed his thanks to those smoking and selling Boston butts for The Children's Shelter.
