Mission Thailand group
to share trip experiences

The Mission Thailand group of 29 people from Williams Baptist College and the First Baptist Church in Walnut Ridge returned Sunday from an 11-day trip. They will be giving a presentation about their mission trip Sunday at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Several people will be giving testimonies, and they will also be presenting a slideshow. The TD is planning a feature on their trip next week, but if you want to hear it firsthand, the public is invited Sunday evening.

I was not aware that Frank Shell was a baseball catcher in the minor leagues until his death last week. He is, of course, the namesake for Shell Field at Williams Baptist College, where he coached and taught.

"He played on pennant-winning minor league teams every year throughout the South, including the Industrial, Cotton States, Sally (South Atlantic), International and Mexican Leagues, as well as the Southern Association. He collected several championship rings, watches and MVP awards. He was also selected to play baseball on the elite Black Knights Company team during his service in the Army in Germany, making it to the semifinals of the European G.I. World Series," stated his obituary.

He had a higher calling, went to seminary and was pastor of Southern Baptist churches in Alicia, Walnut Ridge (White Oak and First) and Clinton in Arkansas.

He was the subject of an interesting feature in Thursday's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette titled " Baseball catcher, veteran, preacher." The four children of Frank and Carolyn Shell spent the majority of their growing up years in Walnut Ridge, and the family is fondly remembered.

REMINDER: The beans, cornbread and bluegrass music benefit is Saturday to benefit The Children's Shelter in Walnut Ridge. It will be held at First Baptist Church's MAC building in Walnut Ridge and will feature the Bluegrass Murphy Boys.

The meal will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. with music beginning around 6:30 and ending at 8:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per adult or $5 per child (10 and younger).

Advance tickets can be purchased by calling the shelter at 886-5191 or Judy Turnbull at 886-6796.
