Hicks, Abbott play
final game for CRA
Audrey Jane Hicks and Ashlyn Abbott, both of Walnut Ridge, completed their senior basketball season for Crowley's Ridge Academy in Paragould in the first round of the 1A Region 2 Basketball Tournament.
The girls, and fellow seniors, Lindsey Killough and Katie Diffine, were hoping to extend their season and make a return trip to the state tournament.
Unfortunately, CRA's road to the state tournament required them to face Calico Rock, the state's leadings team in three-point shooting.
The girls were determined and gave a good fight, falling to the Lady Pirates, 75-60. Killough led the Lady Falcons with 24 points, followed by Abbott with 17.
In a feature in the Feb. 23 Paragould Daily Press, the four seniors expressed their emotions about graduating being bittersweet.
Their coach, Amy Austin, agreed.
"I've made the joke all year that I was the counselor now, and I was going to hold their transcripts and not let them graduate," Austin told the Daily Press.
"I've been with them since they were eighth-graders, and they've become like my family. My son thinks he has older sisters because of these girls. They are just really good kids."
Abbott is the daughter of Daniel and Angie Abbott, and Hicks is the daughter of Joe and Melanie Hicks.
