Hillcrest boys qualify for state

Hillcrest's Ethan Holder drives to the basket against a Mammoth Spring defender in the regional semifinals on Friday night. The Screamin' Eagles lost the game 59-37, but went on to win a hard-fought consolation game and qualify for state.

The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles built an early double-digit lead against Izard County Consolidated then withstood a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Cougars 80-79 in the boys' consolation game of the 1A Region 2 basketball tournament at Brockwell on Saturday. The victory earned Hillcrest a spot in the 1A State Tournament at Magnolia. The Eagles were scheduled to play Jasper on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.

Hillcrest led 22-14 after one quarter, and extended their advantage to 41-27 in the second period. ICC made a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, outscoring Hillcrest 29-19 in the period. The Cougars' rally fell one point short, as the Eagles held on for the victory.

Zach Doyle pumped in 30 points to lead Hillcrest. Colman Evans finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jeremiah Turner had 10 points and seven rebounds. Evan Doyle had eight points, and Hunter Nunnally added six. Ethan Holder chipped in five points, and Tyler Parker added a free throw.

Hoxie seasons end at regional

The Hoxie Mustangs and Lady Mustangs saw their basketball seasons end with losses in the first round of the 3A Region 3 Tournament held at Flippin.

Hicks, Abbott play
final game for CRA

Audrey Jane Hicks and Ashlyn Abbott, both of Walnut Ridge, completed their senior basketball season for Crowley's Ridge Academy in Paragould in the first round of the 1A Region 2 Basketball Tournament.
