Lawrence County high school basketball teams concluded play in their district tournaments last week. Five teams earned berths in their respective regional tournaments, while other teams saw their seasons come to an end.

3A-3 at Corning

The Hoxie Lady Mustangs received a bye into the semifinals, where they faced Manila on Friday. The bye also qualified the Lady Mustangs for the regional tournament.

The Lady Mustangs fell to the Lady Lions 51-44.

Hoxie led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, but fell behind the Lady Lions 29-24 in the second period. The Lady Mustangs closed the gap slightly in the third quarter, but still trailed 39-36 entering the final period.

Cayley Rosson led Hoxie with 24 points.

In the boys' division, Jacob Defries scored 26 points as Hoxie clinched a trip to the regional tournament with a 69-47 win over Piggott on Feb. 15.

Piggott jumped out to a 14-8 first-quarter lead, but the Mustangs came to life in the second period, outscoring the Mohawks 21-7 to lead 29-21 at halftime. Hoxie extended its lead to 45-28 in the third quarter.

Colton Watson added 19 points, and Slade Sullens finished with 16 points for Hoxie.

The Mustangs advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to the top-seeded Earle Bulldogs 80-41 on Friday.

Earle led just 20-14 after one quarter, but began to take command of the contest in the second period. A 28-12 advantage in the second quarter gave the Bulldogs a 48-26 halftime lead. Earle stretched its lead to 70-33 after three quarters.

Defries led the Mustangs with 13 points.

1A-2 North at Calico Rock

Hillcrest and Sloan-Hendrix competed in the 1A-2 North District Tournament at Calico Rock, with both teams each earning trips to the regional tournament.

Sloan-Hendrix's Britney Wolfe poured in 28 points as the Lady Greyhounds defeated Izard County Consolidated 63-50 in the girls' bracket on Feb. 14. Wolfe hit six three-pointers in the contest.

The Lady Greyhounds lost to Norfork in the second round.

Hillcrest's Lady Screamin' Eagles overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Mammoth Spring Lady Bears 45-40.

The Lady Eagles outscored Mammoth Spring 15-6 in the fourth quarter to grab the win and advance to the semifinals.

Lindsey Crews scored 13 points and Mackenzie Nunnally added 12 for Hillcrest.

The Hillcrest girls fell to Calico Rock 72-44 in one girls' semifinal game. The Lady Pirates exploded to a 32-8 lead in the first quarter and led 53-19 at halftime.

Nunnally led Hillcrest with 11 points.

Boys

On the boys' side of the bracket, Norfork jumped out to a 44-22 halftime lead en route to defeating Sloan-Hendrix 82-60 on Feb. 14.

Hillcrest defeated the host Calico Rock Pirates to clinch a regional berth on Feb. 15.

Colman Evans rang up 30 points, and Zach Doyle added 17 for the Screamin' Eagles.

In the semifinal round, Hillcrest fell to the Izard County Cougars 68-54 on Thursday.

The Cougars led 24-11 after one quarter, 35-20 at halftime and 50-38 at the end of the third period.

For Hillcrest, Zach Doyle had 20 points, and Tyler Parker added 11. Colman Evans scored nine points, and Hunter Nunnally had five points. Evan Doyle and Ethan Holder each had three points. Aaron Helms scored two points, and Jeremiah Turner added a free throw.

1A-3 East at Paragould

Black Rock's senior boys defeated Armorel 50-39 in the 1A-3 East District Basketball Tournament on Feb. 14 at Paragould.

The Zebras started quickly, racing out to a 16-5 first-quarter lead. Armorel closed to within 26-20 at the intermission, before Black Rock stretched the gap to 37-26 entering the fourth quarter.

Tyler Newell led the Zebras with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Sam Clem finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

With the win, the Zebras advanced to the semifinals, where they lost to Bay 72-50 on Thursday.

Clem had 21 points for Black Rock.

Girls

The Black Rock Lady Zebras were defeated by Armorel's Lady Tigers 73-61 on Feb. 14. Kaylie Hammock led the Lady Zebras with 16 points. Christian Ervin and Ranie Robinett added 10 points apiece.

2A-3 at Cherry Valley

Walnut Ridge's senior boys defeated Maynard 60-49 in the 2A-3 District Basketball Tournament on Feb. 14 at Cherry Valley.

The Bobcats led 15-7 after one quarter, 22-14 at halftime and 40-25 after three quarters.

Range Weeks led the Cats with 21 points, which included hitting 10-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter. Hunter Flippo finished with 13 points. Zach Crisler had 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Matt Cox added 10 points.

Walnut Ridge next faced Rector on Thursday, falling to the Cougars 41-36.

Walnut Ridge was in command during the first half, leading 10-7 at the end of the first quarter and 24-18 at halftime. Rector took control after the intermission, outscoring the Bobcats 13-4 in the third period and 10-8 in the final quarter to take the win.

Crisler led Walnut Ridge with 17 points, while Range Weeks added nine points.

The Walnut Ridge senior boys finished the season with a 13-13 record.

Girls

The Lady Bobcats' season ended with a 51-45 loss to Riverside in the district tournament on Feb. 15.

Audrey McElrath scored nine points for Walnut Ridge.
