Justices approve positionThe Lawrence County Quorum Court approved adding a part-time position for the District Court office at its meeting Monday night. Justices have been considering the possibility of adding this position due to a growing workload in the office. District Court Clerk Joyce Roberts had reported that an additional employee, even on a part-time basis, would cut down on overtime in the office. Justices also discussed grant opportunities for the Lawrence County ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs) Coalition. The court authorized application for a Drug Free Communities grant with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department acting as the fiscal agent. If approved, the grant would provide $125,000 a year for five years, which would be matched 100 percent by the coalition with funds and in-kind labor. An already approved $20,000 Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws grant was also discussed. Part of the grant's funds can be used to pay officers to do after hours patrols of events, such as proms.
