WR teams beat Riverside
The Walnut Ridge basketball teams traveled to Lake City to face the Riverside Rebels in 2A-3 Conference action on Thursday.
The Walnut Ridge senior girls evened their league record at 6-6 with a 56-31 thumping of the Lady Rebels.
The Lady Bobcats led 13-9 after one quarter and continued to pull away, stretching the lead to 29-16 at the intermission and 45-24 after three quarters.
Ashlyn Cothern led Walnut Ridge with 16 points. Caroline Kelley had 15 points, and Anna Bland added 12. Katie Lewis finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Allyson McQuay and Whitney Rider combined for 24 points, as the junior Lady Bobcats defeated Riverside 34-27. McQuay scored 13 points, and Rider finished with 11.
Walnut Ridge's senior boys also were victorious, using a second-half surge to down the Rebels 62-55.
The Bobcats trailed 18-12 after one period of play and 36-28 at the break. Walnut Ridge outscored Riverside 16-8 in the third period to knot the game at 48-48 entering the fourth quarter. The Cats continued their strong play in the final period to pull away for the win.
Range Weeks led the Bobcats in scoring with 23 points. He knocked down five three pointers, with four coming in the Cats' second-half rally. Zach Crisler added 10 points.
In junior boys action, Riverside's Gavin Stone scored 29 points, including nine three-pointers, all before halftime, to lead the junior Rebels past Walnut Ridge 53-33.
Spencer Wilson had 12 points for Walnut Ridge. The junior Bobcats fell to 9-11 for the season.
Walnut Ridge hosted conference opponent Maynard at Sharum Gymnasium earlier in the week and came away with four victories over the Tigers.
On Jan. 23, the senior Lady Bobcats defeated Maynard 55-45.
Kelley scored 19 points, and Bland added 10 for Walnut Ridge. Hannah Massey, Audrey McElrath and Lewis each had six points. Ashley Roacho finished with four points, and Holly Looney added three.
Walnut Ridge's junior girls squeaked past Maynard 50-48, as McQuay tallied 20 points.
Rider had 10 points, and Courtney Cox had eight. Chloe Rice and Sunnie Cunningham had four points apiece, while Hannah Doane and Jordan Vaughn each had two.
The Walnut Ridge senior boys defeated the Tigers 76-65 on Jan. 24.
The Bobcats led 19-10 after one quarter, 37-34 at halftime and 55-49 after three periods.
Crisler led Walnut Ridge with 22 points. Weeks had 18 points, and Hunter Flippo added 12. Matt Cox finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Cole Hicks had 10 points.
Walnut Ridge's junior high boys won a close game with Maynard, 44-41.
Maynard led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime. Walnut Ridge took the lead 32-30 at the end of the third quarter and the teams were tied 38-38 at the end of regulation. The junior Bobcats outscored Maynard 6-3 in overtime to take the win.
Kenzie Flippo led Walnut Ridge with 14 points. Tyler Binkley had 10 points, and Wilson added nine.
