Interest in peanuts
Larry Vance (right), field representative with Clint Williams Company, visits with Ben Henry of Baltz Feed Company at a meeting hosted by the peanut company on Jan. 25.
Clint Williams Company representatives hosted a meal on Jan. 25 for those who have been working with the company regarding peanut production and those who might have interest in the peanut industry.
Larry Vance, field representative for Clint Williams, said the meal was to thank existing growers and give those who might be interested in peanuts a little information.
"This will be our third year to buy peanuts in this general area," he said, noting that the company purchased peanuts out of Newport from 1985-2000. Drought issues in Texas are causing a resurgence of peanut farming in Arkansas.
"We've been in Arkansas in the past, so we are familiar with Arkansas production, even though we have just been here two years, locally," he said.
He shared that Gordon Drennan and his wife have relocated to the area from Oklahoma to help oversee peanut production.
Last year, Clint Williams bought peanuts from 12 farmers in Lawrence County and the surrounding area. The company did a lot of custom harvesting, a service that Baltz Feed Company will now offer.
"We are expecting substantially more farmers and more interest this year," Vance said. "We want to thank the producers from last year who had faith and worked with our company on a crop they are not familiar with."
