Rector uses early

The first quarter proved to be the difference, as the Rector Cougars built an early 18-point lead and went on to defeat the Walnut Ridge Bobcats 54-42 in senior boys basketball action in front of a homecoming crowd at Sharum Gymnasium Friday night.
Rector led 19-1 after the first quarter, 31-15 at halftime and 42-35 at the end of the third period.
Rector's Lady Cougars defeated the Walnut Ridge senior girls 66-53 on Thursday evening at Walnut Ridge.
The Lady Bobcats led 14-8 after one quarter. Rector dominated the second and third periods to move out to a 53-31 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Caroline Kelley scored 10 points for Walnut Ridge, and Anna Bland added nine. Daniel Vaughn scored eight points, and Ashlyn Cothern added seven. Jodie Reithemeyer finished with six points. Audrey McElrath and Katie Lewis each scored four points, and Holly Looney added three.
The Walnut Ridge junior high girls defeated Rector 41-36 in overtime. Allyson McQuay led the junior Lady Cats with 18 points. Chloe Rice scored eight points, and Hannah Doane had seven. Whitney Rider finished with six points, and Courtney Cox added two.
The Lady Bobcats turned in an impressive performance against 2A-3 conference opponent Cross County on Jan. 17, hammering the Lady Thunderbirds 71-25 at Sharum Gymnasium.
Walnut Ridge led 13-5 at the end of the first quarter, before blowing the game open with a 27-5 second period, resulting in a 40-10 lead at intermission.
McElrath and Kelley each scored 11 points for the Lady Bobcats. Cothern and Vaughn chipped in 10 points apiece.
The Lady Bobcats improved to 4-7 in conference play and 6-10 overall.
The Walnut Ridge junior high girls defeated Cross County 40-14. McQuay led the Lady Bobcats with 20 points.
The Walnut Ridge seventh-grade team defeated Cross County 39-29.
The Walnut Ridge senior boys defeated Ridgefield Christian 64-55 on Jan. 17 at Jonesboro.
The Bobcats led 32-26 at halftime and 49-35 after three quarters.
Zach Crisler led Walnut Ridge with 28 points.
Walnut Ridge's junior high boys defeated Ridgefield 59-29.
