Tough budget year in Hoxie
The Hoxie City Council was scheduled to meet in a special session Tuesday night to discuss the 2012 budget. The discussion was tabled at the Jan. 10 meeting to give the council time to examine issues facing the city.
A special meeting was also held on Jan. 17 to discuss the budget, but it was decided another meeting was needed. The budget must be finalized by Jan. 30.
Mayor Lanny Tinker reported to the council that the 2012 budget was $86,000 over the city's estimated income.
Tinker said he believed that Hoxie was facing one of the most difficult budget adoptions in years.
The mayor said he and the city council have volunteered to take a pay cut during 2012, which will also help balance the budget.
In a phone interview on Tuesday afternoon the mayor said he and city clerk/treasurer Katie Smith had taken a hard look at past budgets and had made suggestions for cutting expenses.
"Our goal for this meeting is hopefully to pass a budget," Smith said.
The council was scheduled to choose a president pro tempore to serve in the mayor's absence and to appoint someone to fill the position on the reuse committee previously held by Ed "Coot" Smith.
