BR falls to Armorel
Black Rock's boys and girls basketball teams took to the road Friday to face 1A-3 East Conference foe Armorel.
Armorel defeated Black Rock in the senior boys contest 61-42.
Tyler Newell led the Zebras with 19 points, and Shane Fleming added 14.
Three Lady Zebras scored in double figures in a losing effort, as the Armorel senior girls defeated Black Rock 66-49.
Kaylie Hammock led Black Rock with 12 points. Sarah Penn finished with 11 points, and Christian Ervin added 10.
In junior boys action, Armorel squeaked past Black Rock 43-35 in overtime. The Armorel junior girls defeated Black Rock 33-19.
Riverside's Lady Rebels pulled away from Black Rock in the fourth quarter to post a 48-33 victory over the Lady Zebras on Thursday at Lake City.
Riverside led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter, before the Lady Zebras tied the contest at 20-20 heading into intermission. Riverside led 30-24 after three quarters and went on to outscore Black Rock 18-9 in the final period.
Cheyenne Vance led the Lady Zebras with 10 points.
The Riverside junior girls defeated Black Rock 48-15.
The Black Rock Zebras earned their second conference win of the season by blasting the Weiner Cardinals 81-59 on Jan. 10 at Black Rock.
The contest was competitive in the first half, with Black Rock leading by only one point, 30-29, at the intermission.
The Zebras took control of the game in the second half, stretching their lead to 49-41 after three periods. Black Rock went on to outscore the Cardinals 32-18 in the fourth quarter to finish off their visitors.
Tyler Newell and Sam Clem nearly matched Weiner's scoring output, combining for 57 points between them. Newell scored 29 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, while Clem had 28 points, with 11 coming in the final period.
The Zebras improved to 2-3 in 1A-3 East play and 4-15 overall.
Weiner defeated Black Rock 80-58 in senior girls basketball action on Jan. 10.
The contest was deadlocked at 30-30 at halftime, but the Lady Cardinals dominated the second half to claim the victory.
Ervin led Black Rock with 20 points.
Weiner also won the junior girls game 40-26.
