Mustangs play in Kell Classic
Staff Writer The Hoxie Mustangs and Lady Mustangs basketball teams began play in the Kell Classic on Saturday at Swifton. In the boys bracket, Hoxie advanced with a 66-46 victory over the Weiner Cardinals. The Mustangs were led by Colton Watson's 32 points. Jacob Defries scored 17 points for Hoxie. The Lady Mustangs were defeated by Crowley's Ridge Academy 58-46.
The Manila Lions eked out a 54-52 overtime victory at Hoxie in 3A-3 boys action on Friday. Hoxie led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter, and the teams went into the locker room tied 18-18 at halftime. The Mustangs moved out to a 28-24 advantage in the third quarter, before Manila came back in the final period to send the contest into overtime deadlocked at 41 apiece. The Lions outscored Hoxie 13-11 in the extra period to come away with the victory. Watson scored 24 points for Hoxie. Slade Sullens had 11 points, and Defries added 10 for the Mustangs. The Hoxie junior high boys defeated Manila 43-41.
The Mustangs defeated Piggott 55-50 in senior boys action Jan. 3 at Piggott. Defries and Watson each scored 17 points for Hoxie.
