Mustangs defeat Corning
Staff Writer The Hoxie Mustangs broke open a close game in the fourth quarter in defeating the Corning Bobcats 65-40 in 3A-3 senior boys basketball action Friday night at Corning. Hoxie led 26-23 at halftime and 41-37 after three quarters before outscoring the Bobcats 24-3 in the final period to secure the win. Colton Watson poured in 29 points to lead the Mustangs. Jacob Defries added 15 points. Corning won a junior boys contest 42-39 and a seventh-grade game 28-6.
Manila raced out to a huge first-quarter lead and went on to defeat Hoxie's Lady Mustangs 59-47 on Thursday at Manila. The Lady Lions led 24-5 after one quarter, 34-20 at halftime and 46-29 entering the fourth quarter. Courtney Sears led Hoxie with 18 points, while Autumn Nelson added 14. Manila won a junior girls contest 54-18.
The Hoxie senior boys played a strong first half at Rivercrest on Dec. 6, only to see the Colts rally for a 66-63 victory. Hoxie led 18-6 after one quarter and 33-19 at halftime. Rivercrest outscored the Mustangs 27-16 in the third quarter to pull to within 49-46 heading into the final period. The Colts' carried their momentum into the fourth quarter, when they overtook the Mustangs for the win. Watson hit seven three-pointers and finished with 29 total points to lead Hoxie. In junior boys action, Rivercrest defeated Hoxie 62-32.
The Rivercrest senior girls defeated Hoxie 71-44. Rivercrest led 24-15 after a quarter, 44-23 at halftime and 63-31 after the third quarter. Brandy Alls led Hoxie with nine points.
The Lady Mustangs earned an easy 55-25 win over conference foe Piggott on Dec. 5 at Hoxie. Alls led Hoxie with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Nelson had 11 points, and Sears added 10. Piggott won a junior girls contest 34-20.
