WBC Tournament underway
The annual Williams Baptist College Tournament tipped off Saturday afternoon at WBC's Southerland-Mabee Center. Action on the first day included four first-round games from the girls' bracket and two from the boys' bracket, with the remaining first-round game scheduled for Monday.
Saturday's matchups included the following games:
Corning's Lady Bobcats got off to a fast start and never looked back in defeating Black Rock 64-35.
The Lady Bobcats led 18-7 after one quarter, 35-14 at halftime and 56-26 at the end of three periods.
Sarah Penn led the Lady Zebras with nine points, while Cheyenne Vance added eight. Kaylie Hammock and Christian Ervin each had six points. Megan Carey finished with four points, and Ranie Robinett added two points.
The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles advanced to Tuesday's second round with a 42-38 victory over Tuckerman's Lady Bulldogs.
Hillcrest led 13-9 after one quarter, 20-16 at halftime and 29-27 after three periods.
Kellie Beasley led the Lady Eagles with 13 points. Lindsey Crews scored 11 points. Mackenzie Nunnally and Sarah Saffell added six points apiece. Kathryn Tidwell had four points, and Shea Durham had two.
Hillcrest and Maynard squared off in the first boys game of the tournament, with the Screamin' Eagles coming out on top 74-58.
The contest was close early, with Hillcrest leading by one, 13-12, at the end of the opening period. Hillcrest then took control of the game, outscoring the Tigers 45-25 over the next two quarters, and held a 58-37 lead heading into the fourth period.
Hunter Nunnally led Hillcrest in scoring, with 19 points, while Colman Evans finished with 16 points. Evan Doyle added nine points, and Corey Richey had eight. Tyler Parker and Brandon Scott each had seven points, and Zach Doyle added four.
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats jumped out to a 20-6 lead after one quarter and went on to defeat Maynard's Lady Tigers 70-37.
The Lady Cats led 32-19 at halftime and 49-33 entering the fourth quarter.
Anna Bland led four Lady Bobcats in double figures with 16 points. Daniel Vaughn scored 14 points, Audrey McElrath had 12, and Katie Lewis added 10 points. Holly Looney, Ashley Roacho and Caroline Kelley each put in six points.
The Pocahontas Redskins' defense held Sloan-Hendrix to single digits in each quarter en route to defeating the Greyhounds 58-21 in a first-round game in the boys' bracket.
The Redskins led 24-4 after one period, 41-7 at halftime and 54-19 after three quarters.
Daniel Rowsey led the Greyhounds with 10 points. Tyler Booth finished with three points. Lucas Conrad, Austin Clark, Zeb Gipson and Blake Bennett had two points apiece.
In the only game of the day featuring two Lawrence County teams, Hoxie's Lady Mustangs defeated the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds 57-53.
The Lady Greyhounds led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Hoxie fought back to take a 30-26 lead at the halftime break. The Lady Mustangs stretched the lead to 45-34 after three quarters, and held off a Sloan-Hendrix rally in the final period to take the win.
Hoxie was led by Cayley Rosson's game-high 24 points. Krista Coffell added nine points, while Courtney Sears and Brandy Alls scored seven points apiece. Autumn Nelson had six points, and Maddison Woodard added four.
Britney Wolfe led Sloan-Hendrix with 19 points. Madicyn Huddleston scored 14 points, and Shayla Dickson added 10. Ashley Ward had four points, while Sara Childress, Eunita Ames and Katie Castleberry scored two points each.
First-round action continued on Monday, with two boys games. A game between the Hoxie and Corning boys, scheduled for Monday, has been rescheduled for today at 5 p.m.
Kevin Jackson scored 22 points to lead Southside past Tuckerman 68-49.
The game was close for three quarters, with Southside holding a 36-33 lead entering the final period. The Southerners outscored Tuckerman 32-16 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats overcame a slow start to defeat Black Rock 56-45.
The Bobcats trailed 16-6 at the end of one quarter, but came back in the second period, outscoring the Zebras 20-3 to move into a 26-19 lead at the break. The teams played an even third quarter and Walnut Ridge carried a 37-30 advantage into the final period.
Walnut Ridge was led by Range Weeks with 15 points. Zach Crisler scored 12 points. Eric Wilcoxson and Hunter Flippo each had eight points. Matt Cox had five points, and Cole Hicks and Clay Hufstedler added four apiece.
Sam Clem led Black Rock with a game-high 20 points. Caleb McKenzie scored 11 points, and Derek Nunally had eight. Shane Fleming had four points, and Elijah Mondy added two points.
