Hoxie falls to Fordyce in playoffs
Fordyce quarterback Cole Johnson tossed a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Redbugs to a 34-26 victory over the Hoxie Mustangs in the first round of the 3A state football playoffs Friday night at Crider Field.
His counterpart, Hoxie's Sebastian Irvin, also turned in a productive game, rushing for 111 yards and two scores, and passing for a touchdown.
Johnson put Fordyce on the scoreboard first, scoring on a five-yard run late in the first quarter.
Hoxie tied the game early in the second period on Irvin's seven-yard run and Seth Hart's PAT with 11:07 to play in the quarter.
The Redbugs then added a pair of scores to move out to a 21-7 advantage. First, Johnson passed 10 yards to Rashed Allen with 8:50 to play in the period. Austin Nutt scored on a four-yard run with 2:37 to play.
Hoxie responded on their ensuing drive, capped by Irvin's 13-yard run. The PAT was no good, as Fordyce carried a 21-13 lead into the locker room.
The Redbugs extended their lead to 28-13 when Johnson connected with Thaxton Tolbert on a 15-yard scoring pass early in the third quarter.
Hoxie continued to hang tough, as Devin Roberts ran for a 16-yard touchdown to bring the Mustangs back to within 28-19 with three minutes to play in the period.
The Mustangs' momentum was short-lived, as Fordyce's Kentrell Simmons returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown. Hoxie's defense stopped the two-point conversion to keep the Redbugs' lead at 34-19 entering the fourth quarter.
Irvin brought the Mustangs close again, this time with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Mashburn midway through the final period. Hart's PAT brought the Mustangs to within 34-26, but it would prove to be Hoxie's final point, as the Redbugs' defense denied the Mustangs' any further scoring opportunities.
Roberts led Hoxie's ground game, with 133 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Irvin finished with 111 yard and two touchdowns on 25 carries. D.J. Kendrice carried three times for 52 yards, and Mashburn added 14 yards on six carries.
Irvin completed seven-of-24 pass attempts for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Mashburn caught three passes for 24 yards and a touchdown. Kendrick had two receptions for 27 yards. Roberts had a 50-yard reception, and Tyler Hall had one reception for 25 yards.
Hoxie wrapped up the 2011 gridiron season, with a final record of 6-5. The Mustangs finished third in the 3A-3 conference with a league mark of 5-2.
