The Rivercrest Colts scored 13 points in the final 1:46 of the game to edge the Hoxie Mustangs 23-21 in a 3A-3 conference showdown Thursday night at Wilson.

Hoxie opened the scoring on Sebastian Irvin's 17-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Hall in the first quarter. Seth Hart's PAT gave Hoxie a 7-0 lead with 7:13 to play in the opening period.

Rivercrest threatened to tie the game late in the first half, but the Mustangs defense kept the Colts out of the end zone, forcing Rivercrest to settle for a field goal with 52 seconds to play in the half.

Hoxie extended its lead to 14-3 when Devin Roberts broke loose for a 51-yard touchdown run with 9:19 remaining in the third quarter. Rivercrest answered on Phillip Porter's 12-yard scamper. The PAT cut Hoxie's lead to 14-10 with 5:21 to play in the period.

The Mustangs' defense rose up again when Tyler Hall intercepted a Rivercrest pass and raced 61 yards for a touchdown. Hart's PAT gave Hoxie a 21-10 lead with seven minutes to play in the game.

Rivercrest began its comeback when Porter found Tay Baber for a seven-yard touchdown pass, making the score 21-16 with 1:46 left in the game.

The Colts then recovered an onside kick to set up their final drive. Porter passed to Baber for a touchdown from four yards out with only 15 seconds showing on the clock. The PAT set the final score.

Roberts and Irvin each rushed for over 100 yards for Hoxie. Roberts finished with 112 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts, while Irvin carried 28 times for 110 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Mashburn added 21 yards on four carries.

Irvin completed four-of-11 passes, for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Hall had three receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown, and Mashburn caught a pass for six yards.

Penalties proved costly for the Mustangs. Hoxie was flagged 15 times for 130 yards, while the home team was penalized only six times for 45 yards.

Joe Gage led the Mustangs on defense with 16 tackles, while Irvin recorded 13 stops. Dillon Cagle, Colton Brown and Hall each made 11 tackles. Hall also returned an interception for a touchdown. Cody Treadaway finished with 10 tackles.

Hoxie finishes the regular season with a 6-4 overall record. The Mustangs went 5-2 in 3A-3 conference play to earn a home playoff game as the conference's third seed. Hoxie will host the Fordyce Redbugs at Crider Field on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Ticket price is $5.
