Holiday shopping season begins
Gretchen Hunt
A Christmas open house was held in Portia last weekend, and several Walnut Ridge businesses will participate in a Christmas open house this Sunday as local merchants are kicking off the holiday shopping season. This Sunday's event, which will be held from 12:30-5:30 p.m., will include refreshments, discounts, door prizes and gifts. Participating businesses include Lady Bug Flower Shop and Red Carpet Weddings and Events, Special Things and Flower Basket, The Prescription House, Glam, Ma & Pa's Flea Market, ImageZ, Celebrations, imagine and Adrianna's. At each store, shoppers will have a chance to register for a grand prize, which will be given away at the 5:45 p.m. lighting of the Christmas tree at Beatles Park in downtown Walnut Ridge. Presence is required to win the grand prize. In addition, the Downtown Walnut Ridge organization and the Lawrence County Tourism Committee are kicking off a 42-inch flat-screen TV giveaway in connection with Beatles Park. Individuals can pick up forms during the open house on Sunday to enter for the television, which will be given away on Dec. 21. A secret phrase, hidden in the sculpture at Beatles Park, must be found to earn a chance to win the TV. Susan Lady, one of the event's organizers, said all the activities are about encouraging people to shop in Lawrence County. She said merchants have worked hard to prepare their stores for the event, and shoppers can take advantage of special sales during the day. "It's a great opportunity to visit all the local merchants and see what is available," Lady said. "We hope everyone will come out and visit and enjoy the day with us." She expressed appreciation to businesses that are helping sponsor the open house, as well. They are First National Bank, Regions Bank, Cavenaugh Auto Group, The Times Dispatch, Hays, Sexton Pharmacy, iBERIABANK and KRLW.
