WR plans to apply for grant
At a special meeting on Nov. 1, the Walnut Ridge City Council voted to apply for a $150,000 grant from the Arkansas Rural Development Commission to build a parking lot for the new police station.
The city recently relocated it police department to the former Smelser Plumbing building on Highway 67B
The lot next to the building, which currently contains a house, is the proposed site for the parking lot. Plans are to remove the house.
Council member Paula Haskins asked if the house could be sold to be moved. Other aldermen discussed possibly giving the house to a person or company in exchange for removal.
Mayor Don House said he was unsure of the condition of the house, but there would be time to explore options. If the grant is approved, the earliest the city could receive it is January.
House reported that County Judge Dale Freeman had offered equipment and assistance on the parking lot. Gravel and chat will have to be laid, prior to asphalt work.
In other business, council members voted unanimously to appoint Adam Weeks as city attorney.
