Hoxie rolls over Harrisburg, 68-26

Devin Roberts turned in a five-touchdown performance, and the Hoxie Mustangs scored early and often in rolling to a 68-26 victory over 3A-3 conference rival Harrisburg Friday night at Crider Field.

Devin Roberts opened the Mustangs' scoring with a 19-yard run just 20 seconds into the contest. Roberts scored on a 21-yard run with 9:56 to play in the first quarter to put Hoxie in front 14-0. The Mustangs' lead grew to 21-0 when Sebastian Irvin ran for a 14-yard touchdown with 8:32 remaining in the quarter.

Harrisburg cut into Hoxie's lead when Marcus Smith scored on a 38-yard run with 4:11 to play in the period. Smith ran in the conversion to bring the Hornets to within 21-8.

Irvin connected with Tyler Hall for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds to play to extend the Mustangs' advantage to 27-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Kenny Mashburn scored on a 56-yard run early in the second quarter and D.J. Kendrick ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 35-8. Harrisburg was driving for a score when Ryan Troutman picked off a Hornet pass and returned it 75 yards to give Hoxie a 41-8 lead.

Smith tried to keep Harrisburg in the game, running for a 28-yard touchdown with 3:38 to play in the period, and scoring on a three-yard quarterback keeper to cut the Mustangs' lead to 41-20 with two minutes remaining in the first half.

Roberts found the end zone again, this time from 10 yards out to push the Mustangs' lead to 48-20 with 35 seconds to play in the half.

Harrisburg turned to trickery to add a final touchdown before halftime. Smith passed downfield to Jordan Harper, who then lateraled to Hunter McGill who raced to the end zone as time expired in the half. Hoxie stopped the two-point conversion attempt and carried a 48-26 lead into halftime.

Hoxie's offense continued to roll in the third quarter, putting up 20 more points, while the Mustang defense kept the Hornets off the scoreboard in the final two quarters.

Sebastian Irvin scored on a 27-yard run with 8:51 to play in the third period. Roberts scored on a 14-yard run with 6:52 remaining. Roberts then intercepted a Harrisburg pass and returned it a school-record 83 yards for his fifth touchdown of the game. Seth Hart added his sixth PAT for the game's final point.

Irvin led Hoxie in rushing, with 131 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, while Roberts finished with 108 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries. Mashburn had 64 yards and a touchdown on two carries. Cody Treadaway carried five times for 31 yards. Kendrick rushed three times for 22 yards, and Colton Brown had one carry for eight yards.

Hall had one reception for 15 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Eric Moore had two interceptions and 11 tackles. Colton Brown had 15 tackles and two sacks. Joe Gage recorded 13 tackles and two sacks. Dillon Cagle and Hall each made 12 tackles, and Treadaway had an interception.

Hoxie improved to 4-1 in 3A-3 conference play and 5-3 overall. The Mustangs host Bald Knob for senior night on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
