Mustangs stomp Manila
in conference matchup
The Hoxie Mustangs exploded for 40 points in the first quarter en route to crushing the Manila Lions 47-8 in a 3A-3 conference matchup at Manila Friday night.
Sebastian Irvin got the scoring started for the Mustangs with an 18-yard touchdown run. Seth Hart's PAT gave Hoxie a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest.
Hoxie extended its lead to 14-0 on Irvin's quarterback keeper from a yard out, and Hart's extra point with 7:14 to play in the quarter.
Manila cut Hoxie's lead to 14-8 on a two-yard run by Tucker Miller, followed by a two-point conversion with 6:17 to play in the opening period.
Kenny Mashburn scampered for a 63-yard touchdown on the Mustangs' ensuing possession to give Hoxie a 20-8 lead. Mashburn added a nine-yard scoring run with two minutes to play in the quarter. Irvin ran in the two-point conversion for a 28-8 Mustang advantage.
Devin Roberts scored on a 15-yard run to push Hoxie's lead to 34-8 with 1:45 to play.
The Lions fumbled on their next possession and Roberts scooped up the loose ball and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown for the final points of the quarter.
Mashburn returned a Manila punt 21 yards for Hoxie's final touchdown with 10:15 remaining in the second quarter. Hart's PAT set the final score.
Mashburn led Hoxie in rushing, with 100 yards on just three carries. Roberts finished with 78 yards on seven carries. Cody Treadaway added 47 yards on eight attempts. Jacob Henson carried twice for 40 yards. Irvin had 33 yards on four carries, and Colton Brown had 27 yards on seven carries.
Irvin completed two-of-three pass attempts, for 22 yards.
Tyler Hall and Hart each had a reception.
Hoxie improved to 3-1 in conference play and 4-3 overall. The Mustangs host Harrisburg Friday night, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
