Lady Cats win Hornet Classic title
For the second consecutive year, the Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats volleyball team captured the championship of the Hornet Classic tournament at Harrisburg. Walnut Ridge defeated the host Lady Hornets in the finals 25-22, 18-25, 15-9 on Saturday to earn the title.
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs were also among the teams competing, and the crosstown rivals met twice in the tournament. Hoxie defeated the Lady Bobcats in pool play 25-16, 25-24. The teams met again in the semifinals of bracket play, with Walnut Ridge taking the match 17-25, 25-15, 15-12 to advance to the finals.
Walnut Ridge opened pool play by splitting a pair of matches. The Lady Cats split with Trumann 25-22, 21-25, and Pocahontas 23-25, 26-24. In the second round of pool play, Walnut Ridge split with Batesville Southside 25-19, 21-25 before dropping their first match to Hoxie.
The Lady Bobcats advanced to bracket play as the seventh seed and opened the round by defeating Izard County Consolidated 25-8, 25-16. Walnut Ridge dropped the first game of their next match to Batesville Southside 24-26, but rallied to win the next two games 25-20, 15-6 to set up a rematch with Hoxie in the semifinals. The Lady Cats won the rematch, and then defeated Harrisburg in the finals to claim the championship.
For the tournament, Anna Bland delivered on 62-of-63 serve attempts (98%), including a perfect 29-of-29 and nine aces in bracket play. As a team, the Lady Bobcats were successful on 94% of their serves on the day. Ashlyn Cothern had a team-high 11 aces, and added 26 of her 50 assists in bracket play.
Caroline Kelley was 42-of-46 serving, with three aces and 71 digs, including 47 digs during bracket play. She also led the team with 28 kills for the tournament. Katie Lewis finished with 27 kills and 17 blocks, including 19 kills and 11 blocks in bracket play. Daniel Vaughn had 15 blocks, and Sabrina Knight served eight aces.
Hoxie went undefeated in pool play, by defeating Cave City 25-22, 25-18; ICC 25-12, 25-14; and Walnut Ridge. The Lady Mustangs were seeded second in the bracket round.
Hoxie opened bracket play with a 25-21, 25-22 victory over West Memphis, before losing their rematch with the Lady Bobcats.
For the day, Sarah Manis was 28-of-31 serving, with four aces and 79 assists. Courtney Sears was 37-of-41 from the service line, with 13 aces, and had 26 kills and four digs. Maddison Woodard had 28 kills and four blocks, and Krista Coffell had 13 kills.
Cayley Rosson finished with 19 kills and two blocks, while Grace Hall had 25 kills. Alexi Crow was 23-of-23 serving, with six aces and 14 digs. Maria Fry was nine-of-nine serving, with three aces and five digs. Autumn Nelson had six digs, and Hali Pratt had five digs.
Manis was named to the All-Tournament team.
