Hoxie records homecoming victory
Hoxie's defense held the Corning Bobcats scoreless in the second half and the Mustangs pulled away for a 45-18 homecoming victory Friday night at Crider Field.
Hoxie jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of eight-yard touchdown runs from Devin Roberts.
The Bobcats fought back to close to within 13-12 with a pair of scoring passes. Roberts found the end zone for a third time on a four-yard run with 6:20 to play in the second quarter. D.J. Kendrick ran in the two-point conversion to extend the Mustangs' lead to 21-12.
Corning scored on a 65-yard run to climb to within 21-18 with 4:11 to play in the half. Hoxie quarterback Sebastian Irvin connected with Tyler Hall on a 20-yard scoring pass with 2:16 remaining in the second quarter to push the Mustangs' halftime advantage to 28-18.
Irvin connected with Hall for a 12-yard touchdown with five minutes to play in the third quarter for a 35-18 Hoxie lead. Irvin found Hall for a six-yard score with 20 seconds to play in the period to give the Mustangs a 42-18 lead.
Seth Hart, who was successful on four-of-five extra points, kicked a 25-yard field goal with 8:32 to play in the game to close out the scoring.
Irvin finished with 10 completions on 15 attempts, for 103 yards and three touchdowns.
Kenny Mashburn led Hoxie's ground attack, with 99 yards on nine carries. Roberts finished with 85 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. Cody Treadaway rushed 13 times for 43 yards. Kendrick added 32 yards on two carries. Zach Manus had three carries for six yards.
Hall finished with five receptions for 91 yards and three touchdowns. Hart caught two passes for 11 yards. Kendrick had two receptions, and Slade Sullens caught a pass.
Hoxie improved to 2-0 in 3A-3 conference play and 3-2 overall. The Mustangs hit the road this week to face the undefeated Earle Bulldogs. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
