Mustangs stampede to
42-6 victory at Piggott
The Hoxie Mustangs exploded for 35 points in the second quarter in a 42-6 victory at Piggott on Friday in the opening week of 3A-3 conference play.
After a scoreless first quarter, Devin Roberts put the Mustangs on the board with a one-yard run with 11:28 remaining in the second period. Roberts scored on a seven-yard run on Hoxie's next possession to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead.
Hoxie's defense came up with a big play when Kenny Mashburn picked off a Mohawks' pass and returned it 18 yards for a score and a 21-0 Mustang lead.
D.J. Kendrick scored on a 20-yard run with two minutes left in the half, and quarterback Cody Treadaway scored on a five-yard keeper 30 seconds later to close out the first-half scoring.
Piggott's Nick Haywood ran for a 32-yard touchdown to bring the Mohawks to within 35-6 midway through the third quarter.
Kendrick scored his second touchdown of the game on a 55-yard run with 3:31 to play in the period. Seth Hart added his sixth PAT to end the scoring.
Kendrick led the Mustangs' rushing effort, with 125 yards on just four carries. Roberts finished with 67 yards on 10 carries. Houston Anglin added 44 yards on seven attempts. Mashburn had 25 yards on four carries, and Zach Manus carried twice for eight yards.
Hoxie improved to 2-2 overall and is 1-0 in conference play. The Mustangs host Corning for Homecoming on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
