Hoxie drops game to Highland
Sterling Stowers ran for three touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Highland Rebels over the Hoxie Mustangs 39-21 in senior football action Friday night at Crider Field.
The Rebels scored the game's first points on Stowers' 38-yard pass to Ethan Hoppe with 9:33 to play in the first quarter. Stowers added a four-yard touchdown run with 6:49 to play to boost Highland's lead to 12-0.
Highland struck again in the opening period when Michael Copeland connected with Garrett Sublett for a 45-yard score to push their lead to 19-0.
Stowers scored on a nine-yard run early in the second quarter to give the Rebels a commanding 26-0 lead.
Hoxie refused to go down without a fight, cutting into the Rebels' lead with a pair of scores before halftime. Sebastian Irvin ran five yards to paydirt with five minutes to play in the quarter, and Cody Treadaway scored on a three-yard run in the final seconds of the half to bring the Mustangs to within 26-14 at the break.
Highland put the game away with two scores in the third quarter. Stowers scored on a nine-yard run with 7:20 to play in the period, and Jordan Brewer scored from a yard out, as the Rebels extended to a 39-14 advantage after three periods.
Kenny Mashburn scored Hoxie's final touchdown on a 14-yard run with 2:46 to play in the game. Seth Hart, who was three-for-three on extra points, set the final score.
Irvin completed three-of-three pass attempts, for 18 yards. Treadaway, who played the quarterback position after Irvin was injured near the halftime break, was one-of-three passing, for three yards.
Irvin also led the Mustangs ground attack, with 68 yards on 17 carries. Devin Roberts and Treadaway each finished with 65 yards on 12 and 13 attempts, respectively. D.J. Kendrick added 37 yards on two carries. Mashburn finished with 32 yards on four carries, and Jacob Henson carried once for four yards.
Tyler Hall caught two passes for 18 yards. Kendrick and Mashburn each had a reception.
Hoxie's record now stands at 1-2 overall. The Mustangs take to the road this week, when they open 3A-3 conference play at Piggott on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
