First phase of tourism
projects complete

The first phase of the Lawrence County Tourism Committee's plans to capitalize on the designation of Rock 'n' Roll Highway 67 through Lawrence County was completed in a fun way on Sunday.

Local residents, as well as visitors from throughout the state and nation, descended on downtown Walnut Ridge for the Beatles at the Ridge event, which featured live music throughout the afternoon, culminating with a performance by the Liverpool Legends of Branson.

School election vote held

Patrons of the Hoxie School District elected a new board member in Tuesday's election, but an Oct. 11 runoff will be needed to determine a winner of the board seat for the Lawrence County School District.

The second reading of the Swimming Pool Fence Ordinance was approved after discussion at the Hoxie City Council on Sept. 13. This ordinance will affect almost everyone who wants to set up a swimming pool in Hoxie, from large in-ground pools to small plastic wading pools. A pool is defined as any structure, which has a container of water more than 12 inches deep used for swimming or bathing.

"A tragic accident occurred today in Walnut Ride, claiming the life of one man and injuring Walnut Ridge Code Enforcement Officer Robert Rice," Mayor Don House announced as the city council meeting began last on Sept. 13. "Our prayers go out for the family of the young man who died and for Robert and his family."

Cavenaugh Thumperton
5K to aid Humane Society

Donald Cavenaugh, well-known area car dealer, and his former running partner, the family dog named Thumper, are being honored with a 5K run this Saturday in Walnut Ridge. Cavenaugh is turning 60 this year, and his family could think of no better way to say happy birthday.
