The Hoxie Mustangs faced a stiff challenge on the gridiron when they traveled to Paragould to take on Greene County Tech in senior high football action on Friday.

The Mustangs gave the Golden Eagles, who have made the Class 5A playoffs for the past two seasons, all they could handle. Quarterback Sebastian Irvin ran for a two-yard score on Hoxie's first possession, and Seth Hart added the extra point, as the Mustangs jumped to a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

Tech tied the game when Cody Davis scored from four yards out midway through the first quarter. Hoxie regained the lead when Irvin broke off a 32-yard scoring run. Hart's PAT put the Mustangs back in front 14-7 with just over a minute to play in the opening period.

Travis Ryan returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a score, but Hoxie blocked the extra point attempt to remain in front 14-13.

Neither team was able to dent the scoreboard in the second period, and the Mustangs headed to the locker room with a one-point halftime advantage.

Davis put Tech back in front 20-14 with a 32-yard run early in the third quarter. Hoxie responded when Irvin passed to Tyler Hall for an 11-yard score and Hart added the extra point, giving Hoxie a 21-20 lead midway through the third period.

The Eagles' special teams struck again, as Ryan Cupp returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards to put Tech in front 26-21.

Tyler Morgan added a six-yard touchdown run in the closing seconds of the period to extend Tech's lead to 32-21. The Eagles added a field goal in the fourth quarter to set the final score.

Irvin finished with 187 yards rushing on 29 attempts. He completed seven-of-14 passes for 99 yard. Devin Roberts ran for 58 yards on 16 carries, and Kenny Mashburn carried twice for five yards.

Cody Treadaway and Hall each had three receptions, for 64 and 25 yards, respectively.

Hoxie fell to 1-1 on the season. The Mustangs host the Highland Rebels for Peewee Night on Friday. Senior high kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
