Truck hits WR Police Department

A pickup truck drove into the Walnut Ridge Police Department on Southeast Front Street Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to Officer Robert Rice, who was in the building at the time of the collision.

According to Jim Danley of the Arkansas State Police, a 2003 Toyota pickup was eastbound on Main Street when it left the roadway, crossed Southeast Front Street and entered the WRPD building.

The driver of the truck, Brian Davis, 37, of Pocahontas, was pronounced dead at the scene. Rice was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to The Med in Memphis.

The accident, which occurred at 11:58 a.m. was witnessed by several who stated that the truck was moving at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic on Main Street.

Danley said at this time no conclusion has been drawn as to whether the truck might have malfunctioned. He said the truck did not contain a black box, which has been added to many newer vehicles to determine what occurred during an accident.

He did report that an autopsy is expected to determine if he might have been having a medical problem.

"We're just not sure what happened that would have caused him to be driving so erratically," Danley said.
