WR cheerleaders earn honorsThe Walnut Ridge senior high and junior high cheerleading squads attended the recent NCA Cheer Camp at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock.Sunnie Cunningham, captain of the junior high squad and daughter of Jeremy and Stormy Cunningham, received two top honors at the camp. She was selected as the top All-American, an award that is presented to the individual who scored the highest during the All-American tryouts. Cunningham scored a perfect 23-out-of-23. She also received the Captain's Leadership Award, which is given to one captain for their dedication and inspiration as a leader on their team and at the camp. Madison Cox was also selected as an All-American cheerleader. Other junior high squad members nominated to the NCA All-American team were: Haley Osburn, Cirstin Lee and Hope Lemmons. The girls also won several awards as a squad. They were the recipients of the Champion Chant Trophy, National Championship Bid, Most Improved, Award for Technical Excellence in Stunts, Blue Ribbons for final performance, the Spirit Stick, and the NCA SPOT award for excellent skills in spotting and stunt technique. The Bobcat junior high cheerleaders are coached by Penny Sloan.
Four members of the senior high squad were nominated for All-American. They were Amanda Pickney, Allison Bridges, Natasha Doane and Tristan Simpson. Doane was selected as an All-American and will have the opportunity to participate in a national event with other All-American cheerleaders from around the country. As a squad, WRHS won the Team Safety SPOT award, Herkie team award, 2011 NCA Game Time Top Team Performance, NCA Spirit Stick and NCA Nationals Bid, which allows a team to compete at a national competition. The senior high squad is coached by Melissa Tidwell.
