Chamber notes activities
for children, youth

Schools are now officially out for summer vacation, and hot temperatures have removed any doubt that it is summertime. The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce knows that parents and children look for activities to make the summer break both fun and worthwhile, and they have attempted to compile some of the options available.

Here are a few of the upcoming events or activities that they shared. More details can be found elsewhere in this edition of The TD. This list is by no means complete but should help you start planning.


SWIMMING LESSONS - For a wet and cool option, the Walnut Ridge city pool is offering swimming lessons next week, Monday through Friday. There will be two sessions, one from 10-11 a.m. and another from 11 a.m. to noon. The cost is $25. To register, visit the pool from 1-5 p.m. or call 759-1568.

LIBRARY PROGRAMS - The Lawrence County Library's Summer Reading Program entitled "One World, Many Stories" will be held at all three of the library's locations.

The six-week program with a travel theme began at Imboden on Monday and will be meeting at 1 p.m. Lynn's program will be held on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. beginning Monday, while Walnut Ridge will meet on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. starting Tuesday.

Brian and Terri Kinder will be entertaining on July 12, and Steven the Magician will be in Walnut Ridge on July 19.

The library will also be presenting this program at Hoxie School's Mustang Camp and Walnut Ridge School's Vacation Station.

A "Tween" Summer Reading Program for ages nine to 12 will be offered at Walnut Ridge on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. starting June 15 with age appropriate book chats and crafts.

The teen program will be Fridays throughout the month of July at 2 p.m. This Friday at 7 p.m., a movie will be shown for teens only at the library in Walnut Ridge.

MOVIE AT LYNN - The Driftwood Library in Lynn will be showing a movie on Saturday at noon. Everyone is invited to watch this animated parody of Romeo and Juliet - with gnomes. There is no charge to attend.

BASKETBALL CAMP - First Baptist Church in Walnut Ridge will host a Sports Crusaders Basketball Camp next week, Monday through Friday.

There are two sessions, one for first through third grades and the other for students who have completed fourth through sixth grades.

BLOCK PARTY - Hoxie First Baptist Church will host its annual block party on Saturday from 11-12:30 p.m. The party will include games, inflatables and food and door prizes. Everyone is invited.

VBS: Many area churches host a vacation Bible school at some time during the summer. One of the first is next week at First Baptist Church, Hoxie. Bro. Bob Kary, pastor, invites everyone to attend. For details or transportation, call the church at 886-2360.

WBC BASKETBALL CAMP - Williams Baptist College's annual summer basketball camp will start Monday and will be divided into two sessions, one for younger boys and girls and another for older girls.

LAKE CHARLES - Each Friday through Sunday during the summer months, Lake Charles State Park offers a number of activities conducted by members of the park staff.
