LOCOMOTIVE STOPS IN WR - A large crowd was on hand Monday afternoon as Union Pacific's legendary steam locomotive, No. 844, made a whistle stop at the Amtrak station in Walnut Ridge. No. 844, delivered to Union Pacific in 1945, was the last steam locomotive built for the railroad. The Little Rock Express route, which brought the engine through Lawrence County, beat competing routes for a visit from the locomotive during online voting.

U.S. Sen. Boozman visits
with county leaders, residents

"The Federal budget is the greatest challenge our country has faced since World War II," U.S. Senator John Boozman told county leaders and residents during his visit to Lawrence County on Thursday. "Jobs, jobs, jobs and the economy and gas prices are some of the toughest issues we are dealing with today."

WR Council buys truck for police department

At a special meeting on Friday, the Walnut Ridge City Council voted to purchase a 2005 Dodge Durango 4-wheel drive truck for the city's police department. They also received a report on damage to city property caused by recent storms and flooding.

Residents granted $320,000

FEMA has awarded more than $320,000 in assistance to Lawrence County residents who were victims of the recent flood, according to Brad Craine, public information officer.

Two road projects planned

The Arkansas State Highway Commission has opened bids for improvements to roadways in Lawrence County, according to Commission Vice Chairman John Ed Regenold of Armorel and Lawrence County Judge Dale Freeman.
