Bids for the first phase of Walnut Ridge's sewer extension were opened Tuesday morning at city hall. David Cline Construction of Jonesboro had the lowest bid at $592,580. The bid is unofficial until bid results can be certified by the project engineer.

"The bid is for extending the city's sewer system along Highway 91 to the bypass at Highway 63, property annexed by the city 10 years ago," Mayor House said. "The sewer will cover the south addition of the project, reaching South Point Tiger Express and Crossroads Antiques, as well as the business and industrial site where the potential railroad tie facility will be located."

Officials here for bid openings were Rickey Carter, USDA area specialist for water and wastewater projects in Northeast Arkansas, the city's engineer, David Hopkins, president and engineering manager of Landmark Engineering and Surveying, and Candy Jones of CMS Consulting of Conway, grant administrator.

House said bids for the Highway 34 and Luther Bridge areas will be let in the second phase and Midway Road in a third phase within the next few months. Funding has been secured for sewer extension in those areas, primarily through grants.

The estimated total for all extensions is $2,934,000 after Tuesday's bid came in $66,000 below the estimated cost.

The south addition will be paid for with a USDA grant and a loan from the USDA.

Once the bid is certified today, the city council will hold a special meeting on Thursday night to pass a resolution confirming the acceptance of the bid, and a special meeting for the public will be set.

"I expect the construction to being on or about the first of July," Mayor House said.
