Bobcats end season at stateNathan HibbardStaff Writer The Walnut Ridge Bobcats' baseball season ended with a 12-3 loss to Woodlawn in the first round of the 2A State Tournament on Friday at Pine Bluff.
The Bobcats earned their way into the state tournament with a third-place finish in the 2A North Regional Tournament held at Black Rock. After defeating Cotter in the first round, Walnut Ridge fell to Marked Tree in the semis, then defeated Marmaduke to earn the region's third seed in the state tournament.
Walnut Ridge plated five runs in the first inning en route to a 9-4 victory over Marmaduke in the third-place game on May 10. Teague Phillips led the Cats' offense, going 4-for-4 at the plate, with a home run and two doubles. Chris Dickson batted 3-for-4, and Clay Hufstedler went 2-for-4. Range Weeks was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on 10 hits.
Marked Tree's Ethan Malone blasted two home runs and T.J. Laster added a grand slam as the Indians defeated Walnut Ridge 15-7 in the regional semifinals on May 9. Tyler Dickson led the Bobcats, going 3-for-3 at the plate, with two RBIs and scoring two runs.
The Bobcats exploded for 14 runs in the final three innings to overcome a 3-2 deficit and defeat Cotter 16-3 in the first round on May 6. Phillips batted 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Zach Carson also went 3-for-5. Tyler Dickson and Cole Hicks each added two hits. Carson started on the mound and allowed three runs on four hits and registered 11 strikeouts to earn the complete game victory.
