Hillcrest boys are district champsNathan HibbardStaff Writer Hillcrest's Dylan Wooten struck out 14 batters as the Screamin' Eagles defeated Izard County Consolidated 3-1 in finals of the 1A-2 East District Baseball Tournament on May 4 at Strawberry. Hillcrest broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then added two more scores in the fifth. ICC scored their run in the sixth inning. Wooten allowed the Cougars one earned run on three hits in the complete-game victory. ICC's Preston Harmon also had an excellent outing on the mound, allowing Hillcrest just two hits while ringing up 15 strikeouts. Offensively, Wooten had a hit and scored two runs. Tyler Parker had the Eagle's other hit, and Trevor Morgan scored a run.
After winning the district tournament, the Eagles advanced to the Class 1A Region 2 tournament at Brockwell. Hillcrest faced the Shirley Blue Devils in the first round on Friday. Wooten was key again, tossing a five-inning no-hitter in the Eagles 11-0 shutout victory. The win assured Hillcrest a spot in the state tournament. At the plate, Hunter Nunnally had a hit, drove in three runs and scored three runs. Parker had a hit and two RBIs and scored twice. Cray Howard had a hit, two RBIs and scored two runs. Billy Brannon had a hit, one RBI and scored a run. Zach Doyle had a hit, one RBI and scored a run. Hillcrest defeated Norfork 14-7 in the regional semifinals on Saturday. The Screamin' Eagles fell to Viola 7-2 in the regional finals on Monday. As regional runners-up, Hillcrest will advance to the state tournament at Armorel, where they will play Mulberry on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
