Mustangs defeat CorningNathan Hibbard
The Hoxie Mustangs baseball team traveled to Corning on Thursday and defeated the Bobcats 9-3 in 3A-3 conference action.
Hoxie got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Seth Hart, who had singled and stolen second, scored on a hit by Thomas Kingsland. Corning's Korey Smith hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Bobcats a brief 2-1 lead.
The Mustangs added a run in the second inning when Hayden Defries reached base on a walk, stole second and came home to score on a defensive error on a ball hit by Jacob Defries.
In the fifth inning, Kingsland walked, stole a base and scored on a hit by Tyler Clement, giving the Mustangs a 5-3 advantage. Ryan Vaughn doubled and scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning to make the score 6-3.
Hoxie closed out the scoring in the seventh inning. Hayden Defries walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Jacob Defries. Garrett Hart followed with a two-RBI single to close out the scoring.
For Hoxie, Clement had two hits and an RBI. Garrett Hart drove in two runs, and Jacob Defries had an RBI.
Hunter Flippo was the winning pitcher.
Hoxie improved to 5-7 in conference play and 10-8 overall.
Hoxie defeated the Black Rock Zebras 15-1 on April 19 at Hoxie.
Flippo, Seth Hart, Kingsland, Clement and Jacob Defries each had two hits for the Mustangs.
Vaughn pitched a no-hitter in the four-inning contest to earn the pitching victory.
The Manila Lions defeated Hoxie 6-1 in 3A-3 conference baseball action on April 18 at Hoxie.
Kingsland had two hits to lead the Mustang offense. Seth Hart took the loss on the mound.
