City sells helicopter

Gloria Wilkerson
Staff Writer

Bids on a Bell OH-58A helicopter owned by the city of Walnut Ridge were opened at a special council meeting on Thursday.

The council voted to accept the highest bid which was for $91,759. The bid was made by Mid South Aviation in Black Rock. The lowest bid received was for $70,000.

The helicopter was previously used for mosquito control, but was no longer practical for the city to use, according to Walnut Ridge Mayor Don House.

"The expense of maintenance, insurance, pilot fees and fuel were instrumental in our decision to sell the helicopter," House said. "It was in good running condition, but was just not practical for us any longer."

"We also have a twin engine airplane for sale. The council voted to put it up for bid as soon as we can get it inspected and ready for sale."

The paperwork is currently being finalized for transfer of the title to the helicopter.
