Hillcrest softball team
competes in Classic

The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles opened the 2011 softball season on Friday by playing three games in the Timberwolves Classic hosted by Cedar Ridge High School.

In the first game, Newport rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat the Lady Eagles 7-6. Hillcrest out-hit Newport 7-4, but the Lady Greyhounds capitalized on eight walks and three errors to take the win.

Samantha Blevins, Lindsey Crews and Sarah Saffell each had two hits, and Shea Durham had two RBIs for Hillcrest.

Tuckerman survived a late Hillcrest rally to defeate the Lady Eagles 5-3.

Tuckerman led 5-0 going into the final inning. Hillcrest scored three runs in the inning and had the tying runs on base when the game ended.

Blevins was the starting pitcher and allowed three earned runs while recording four strikeouts and allowing just one walk.

"Samantha threw the ball well, but our hitting was non-existent and we made several errors on routine plays," said Hillcrest head coach Shawn Rose.

Cave City

The Lady Eagles picked up their first win of the season by defeating Cave City 6-2.

Hillcrest recorded three hits in each of the first two innings and jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Blevins pitching and improved defensive play was too much for Cave City to overcome.

Blevins allowed no earned runs, while striking out five and allowing only one walk in seven innings.
