"It's a way for our community to know we (the churches) care about them," said Dr. Bob Kary of First Baptist, Hoxie, chairman of the event. Kary was assisted by other members of a committee consisting of Brent Powell, president of the Ministerial Alliance, David Craig, pastor of Freedom Church, as well as other members of the Ministerial Alliance.
The Strength Team presented five programs, Wednesday through Sunday evenings, at the Walnut Ridge Community Center, and seven school assemblies at Walnut Ridge Elementary School, Black Rock High School, Hoxie High School, Ridgefield Christian School in Jonesboro and three separate assemblies for the Harrisburg-Weiner School.
Nightly attendance at the Community Center was as follows: Wednesday, 366; Thursday, 204; Friday, 356; Saturday, 210; and Sunday, 421. Those totals, along with school assemblies, came to a grand total of 4,281 attending the Strength Team programs, reported Kary.
"All of us agree that this has been a very successful event," he said, adding that 254 decisions for Christ were made, with 134 of them being first-time decisions.
Strength Team members performed such acts as breaking multiple bricks and boards, bending metal poles, tearing thick phone books and other feats of strength. They then shared their personal testimonies and spiritual journeys to Christ.
For the public schools, they geared their message toward self-respect and good character. "I've had very positive response from the schools," said Bro. Dale Hughart, a member of the Ministerial Alliance.
A busload of students from the Harrisburg-Weiner School also came to Walnut Ridge for the Friday night program.
Some schools had scheduling conflicts that prevented them from having the Strength Team visit their schools, the ministerial group noted.
