Staff Writer The Black Rock senior high boys and girls basketball teams and the Hillcrest senior girls competed in the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament held at Brockwell last week.
BR-Mammoth Spring The Mammoth Spring Bears defeated Black Rock 57-43 in the boys final on Saturday. Mammoth Spring outscored the Zebras 23-12 in the fourth quarter to break open a tightly played contest. Black Rock led 12-7 after a quarter and 22-21 at halftime. The Bears moved into the lead during the third quarter and took a 34-31 advantage into the final period. Tyler Newell led Black Rock with 14 points. Black Rock will compete in the Class 1A State Tournament, which will be held at Calico Rock. The Zebras will play Jasper on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
Black Rock defeated Viola 46-31 in the semifinals of the regional tournament Friday night. The victory ensured a trip to the Class 1A State Tournament. The Zebras were in front most of the way, but the Longhorns were able to stay within striking distance. Black Rock held leads of 16-10 after one quarter and 21-16 at halftime. Viola was within 33- 25 at the end of the third quarter, but the Zebras outscored the Longhorns 13-6 in the final period to clinch the win. Joe Paul Carey led Black Rock with 16 points. Khris Foster scored 11 points, and Newell had 10.
The Zebras opened regional play by defeating Calico Rock 52-48 on Wednesday. Black Rock led 15-11 after one period, but fell behind the Pirates 31-27 at halftime. The Zebras regained the lead at 41-40 at the end of the third quarter. Carey led Black Rock with 16 points. Tadd Fore had 12 points, and Hunter Horton had 11.
Hillcrest-CRA The Hillcrest senior girls' basketball season came to a heartbreaking end Thursday night with a 43-41 overtime loss to Crowley's Ridge Academy in the 1A Region 2 Tournament at Brockwell. Hillcrest led 9-3 at the end of the first quarter, but CRA came back in the second period to knot the game 17-17 at halftime. The teams remained tied 27-27 after three quarters and 37-37 at the end of regulation. CRA edged Hillcrest 6-4 in the overtime period to take the win. Lindsey Crews scored 16 points for Hillcrest, and Mackenzie Nunnally added 15.
The Calico Rock Lady Pirates defeated Black Rock 58-22 in a first-round game in the girls' bracket of the regional tournament on Wednesday. Calico Rock led 18-8 after one quarter, 30-14 at halftime and 51-17 at the end of the third quarter. Megan Jones led Black Rock with seven points, and Haley Slusser added six.
Carey, Newell and Tyler Roby of Black Rock were named to the boys All-Regional team. Jones of Black Rock and Nunnally of Hillcrest were named to the girls team.
