Storm system causes
flooding, property damage
A storm system yielding torrential rains and heavy winds traveled through Lawrence County on Thursday causing flooding and property damage.
The first reports of roads under water began to come into the Lawrence County Communications Center that morning and continued throughout the day as between five and seven inches of rain fell.
Several city streets and county roads, as well as portions of highways, were closed due to flooding. Lawrence County Sheriff Jody Dotson
said there were a couple of incidents of cars getting stalled in the flooded areas.
"As fast as the water came up, we are lucky we didn't have anyone swept off the roads," Dotson said.
Another system brought additional rainfall on Sunday and Monday. Fields throughout the county, as well as some county roads, remained under water on Tuesday.
In addition to the rain, the wind did its fair share of damage on Thursday including destroying a farm building at the home of Jason and Charity Andrews on Lawrence 612 Road. A farm building at the home of Delbert and Mary Gall also received heavy damage.
No injuries were reported in connection with the storm.
