Hoxie teams advance to semifinalsNathan Hibbard
The Hoxie senior high boys and girls basketball teams competed in the 3A-3 District Tournament at Piggott last week. The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs each advanced to the district semifinals to earn berths in this week's 3A Region 3 Tournament at Bergman.
The Lady Mustangs got off to a fast start in defeating Harrisburg 59-34 on Thursday. Hoxie led 13-2 after a quarter, 29-12 at halftime and 46-27 after three periods.
Cayley Rosson finished with 17 points for Hoxie, while Kelsey Lewis added 11.
The Hoxie girls faced Corning in semifinal action on Friday. This time, it was the Lady Bobcats jumping to a big early lead, taking an 11-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Hoxie pulled to within 17-10 at halftime, but trailed 28-15 after three periods.
Autumn Nelson led Hoxie with 13 points, and Neely Ragsdell scored 10.
The Lady Mustangs will face Valley Springs on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the regional tournament.
After dispatching the Harrisburg Hornets 71-34 in a first-round contest on Feb. 14, the Hoxie Mustangs faced Tuckerman the following night.
Coy Yasler rang up 27 points, and Zach Crisler scored 23 to lead Hoxie to a 75-61 victory over the Bulldogs. Jacob Defries added 12 points for the Mustangs.
Hoxie then faced the top-seeded Manila Lions in a semifinal contest on Friday. Manila jumped out to 20-7 first-quarter lead and went on to defeat the Mustangs 73-51.
Yasler led Hoxie with 13 points, and Defries had 12.
The Mustangs were scheduled to play Valley Springs today at 5:30 in the regional tournament.
