Black River Bridge
weight limit changing

Changes to the weight limit on the Highway 63 Black River Bridge in Lawrence County became effective Monday, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department officials.

Based on an engineering analysis of the structure and an on-site investigation, an evaluation team recommended that the bridge be posted at 33 tons for five-axle trucks.

Previously, the weight limit was set at the standard limit, which is 40 tons.

Replacement of the 2,608-foot-long bridge is scheduled to begin in 2013. Built in 1949, approximately 10,000 vehicles cross the structure on a daily basis. Until a new bridge is constructed, the existing structure will routinely be monitored and evaluated by AHTD officials.

Impact to travel in the Highway 63 area should be limited because other nearby bridges are already posted at lower weight limits.
