WR Council discusses fire truck, sewer extension

The Walnut Ridge City Council adopted a budget for 2011 and agreed to sell a helicopter to pay for repairs to a fire truck at their meeting on Dec. 14. Alderman Michael "Button" Wallin told the council repairs to one of the city's fire trucks needed to be addressed immediately.

The Compassionate Friends of Lawrence County held their seventh annual Candle Lighting on Dec. 12.

Hoxie votes to close street

The Dec. 14 Hoxie City Council meeting was preceded by a public hearing to discuss the closing of a portion of Franklin Street. Delbert Robins made the request to close a part of Franklin Street by filing a petition with the city.

Polar Freeze, Allisons,
central to Beatles WR visit

One of the most legendary weekends in the history of Walnut Ridge began at the Polar Freeze late one Friday on the night of Sept. 18, 1964. Jack and Velma Allison, owners of the Polar Freeze, sat down recently at the barbecue eatery, along with Charles Snapp, to recall the sequence of events that surrounded the Beatles' historic visit to the Walnut Ridge Airport, their only visit to Arkansas.
