House gives report
on Hwy. 67 work

Walnut Ridge Mayor-elect Don House, a member of the Arkansas Good Roads Transportation Council board of directors, was in Little Rock on Dec. 2 to participate in a meeting of the Council with the Governor's Blue Ribbon Commission and Director Dan Flowers and staff of the Arkansas Highway Commission.

Gov. Beebe spoke at the meeting, as did House and transportation leaders from throughout the state. House was confirmed for another term on the board.

"It is an honor to be an advocate for this area and to work with others in trying to bring the best possible roads to our region," he said.

House reported that grade and structure work on the new freeway-style U.S. Hwy. 67, between Hwy. 226 east of Swifton and the Hoxie/Walnut Ridge bypass, is progressing on schedule. He said he was told by highway officials that the grade and structure work should be finished within 18 months or by mid-2012.

Funding for paving of the grade and structure work will come from future funds provided by Congress through the Federal Highway Trust Fund, the Arkansas Legislature and current revenue sources. House said Director Flowers said that it is reasonable to expect paving contracts to be let in 2014 for the final phase of the Hwy. 67 freeway project to Hoxie and Walnut Ridge. The paving should be completed within another 18 months.

House praised Gov. Beebe, Commissioner John Ed Regenold of Armorel and Director Flowers for their commitment to keeping the 67 project moving.

While Gov. Beebe is committed to building Hwy. 67 to interstate specifications all the way to the Missouri state line north of Corning, only preliminary planning has been done on that stretch, House added.

U.S. Hwy. 67 is one of the oldest highways in the nation and stretches over 1,500 miles from Iowa to the Texas-Mexico border.
