Hoxie falls to Fountain LakeNathan Hibbard
The Fountain Lake Cobras put up 37 first-half points en route to defeating the Hoxie Mustangs 44-6 in the first round of the Class 3A State Football Playoffs Friday night at Fountain Lake High School in Hot Springs.
Fountain Lake, the defending 3A state champions, opened the scoring with a 29-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead. The Cobras extended their lead to 14-0 later in the period with a two-yard run and a two-point conversion.
The game remained 14-0 until the Cobras struck for three touchdowns in the final five minutes of the half to break the game open.
A two-yard run, followed by a successful conversion gave Fountain Lake a 22-0 lead with five minutes to play in the second period. A 74-yard run and conversion made the score 30-0 with two minutes remaining in the half. After a defensive stop, the Cobras returned a Hoxie punt 60 yards for another score with less than a minute to play in the first half. The PAT gave the Cobras a commanding 37-0 halftime advantage.
Fountain Lake scored their final touchdown on an 83-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Hoxie avoided the shutout when Hunter Flippo broke free for a 63-yard touchdown run with 10:53 to play in the game to set the final score.
Offensively for the Mustangs, Sebastian Irvin carried 25 times for 166 yards. Flippo finished with 66 yards on three carries. Tyler Clement had 37 yards on nine attempts. Kenny Mashburn had 23 yards on four carries. Garrett Hart carried once for nine yards, and Robert Vaughn had one carry for two yards.
Irvin completed four-of-10 passes, for 43 yards.
Joe Gage had a 15-yard reception. Tyler Hall had one catch for 10 yards. Flippo and Mashburn each had a nine-yard reception.
The Mustangs concluded the season with a 4-7 record.
