WR drops first-round game
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats' 2010 football season ended with a 27-6 loss to the Parkers Chapel Trojans in the first round of the Class 2A State Playoffs Friday night at Sexton Field.
Walnut Ridge got on the board first when quarterback Payton Poole scored on a 10-yard run with 46 seconds to play in the first quarter. The extra point attempt failed, leaving the Bobcats with a 6-0 lead.
Parkers Chapel answered late in the second quarter when Randy Taylor scored from two yards out with just seven seconds to play in the half. The extra point was good and the Trojans took a 7-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The teams battled through a scoreless third quarter, and the Trojans carried their one-point advantage into the final period.
With Parkers Chapel still nursing the lead, the Trojans' Zach Abbott intercepted a Walnut Ridge screen pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown, giving Parkers Chapel a 13-6 lead with 8:27 to play.
On the Trojans' next possession, Randy Taylor broke free for an 18-yard touchdown. The PAT extended the Trojans lead to 20-7 with 5:33 remaining.
Parkers Chapel sealed the win when Phil Hay picked off a Bobcat pass and returned it 70 yards for a score with four minutes to play. The extra point set the final score.
Preston Matthews led the Walnut Ridge offense with 42 yards rushing on six attempts. Poole had 27 yards on 13 carries, and completed eight-of-34 passes, for 80 yards. Eric Wilcoxson had three receptions for 37 yards.
Defensively for Walnut Ridge, Preston Matthews had 11 tackles, including four for loss. Rowdy Ditto had nine tackles. Richie Ward and Wilcoxson each forced a fumble and recovered a fumble
The Bobcats finished the season with an 8-2 record.
