Mustangs fall to Rivercrest
Staff Writer The Rivercrest Colts concluded an unbeaten regular season with a 48-0 victory over the Hoxie Mustangs on Thursday night at Crider Field. Hoxie finished the regular season with a 3-4 record in 3A-3 conference play and 4-6 overall. The Mustangs will travel to Hot Springs to face Fountain Lake in the first round of the Class 3A State Playoffs on Friday. Rivercrest got on the scoreboard early when Trevor Gregory ran for a 12-yard touchdown with 9:10 to play in the opening quarter. Leading 7-0, the Colts proceeded to score three touchdowns in a three-and-a-half minute span to put the game out of reach. Gregory added a five-yard run with 2:50 to play in the first quarter. Quarterback Demoine Brown ran for a 14-yard score with eight seconds remaining in the quarter. Terrence Banks scored on a 26-yard run 30 seconds into the second period to give the Colts a 28-0 lead. Gregory scored his third touchdown of the evening on a three-yard run late in the period, as Rivercrest took a 34-0 advantage into halftime. The Colts tacked on more points in the second half when Clayton Carlton scored on a one-yard run with 5:44 to play in the third quarter. A five-yard run by Phillip Porter, followed by the PAT, gave the Colts their final points with 1:05 to play in the period. Freshman Robert Vaughn led Hoxie in rushing, with 29 yards on four carries. Tyler Clement added 25 yards on 14 carries. Kenny Mashburn rushed four times for 20 yards. Sebastian Irvin carried once for nine yards, and Hunter Flippo had one yard on four attempts. Irvin completed one-of-six passes for a 20-yard gain to Mashburn.
